Shoalhaven Firebreaks
One clear path could be the difference between safety and serious loss. BeCivil creates compliant, effective firebreaks throughout Shoalhaven, giving property owners peace of mind before fire season.
Whether you’re clearing a boundary, creating access for emergency vehicles or reducing bushfire risk around structures, we bring the right machinery and experience to every job. Our team knows how to cut clean lines through native scrub, paddocks and steep ground without causing unnecessary disruption to the land.
We’ve been supporting local homes, farms and rural properties in Nowra, Tomerong, Berry, Huskisson, Vincentia, Ulladulla and Bomaderry for years. We also understand NSW fire regulations and what rural fire services look for during inspections.

Custom Firebreaks for Every Property
No two properties are the same—so firebreaks shouldn’t follow a one-size-fits-all plan. We tailor our approach to suit your land, fuel loads, terrain and structures. Our work may include slashing overgrown grass, clearing undergrowth, widening access tracks or cutting perimeter breaks to specific widths. Each job is shaped by your goals: whether it’s compliance, protection, or managing regrowth in bush-prone areas.
We work closely with property owners and, where needed, local bushfire authorities to make sure each firebreak aligns with relevant safety guidelines.
Our team is also led by a long-standing member of the NSW Rural Fire Service—so we genuinely understand what’s needed and how to get it done efficiently. Jobs are completed with care, accuracy and long-term risk reduction in mind.
I’m worried about potential bushfires. What can you do?
A firebreak is just what it sounds like. It’s an area with little or no vegetation, including bushes and grasses, that is there to break the fire’s trajectory. Since fire can’t burn in soil, the less vegetation you have in an area, the better the chance you'll be able to prevent the spread.
The exact amount of time it will take to clear an area of land will vary based on the type of materials found there (large trees or only bush?) but we can often clear your block in as little as a day. When you give us a call, we'll come over and take a detailed survey of the land to see if there are any issues which would lengthen, or shorten, the amount of time the job would take.
Do I need approval to clear a firebreak?
In many areas, you’re allowed to create firebreaks under the 10/50 vegetation clearing rules or with a property vegetation plan. However, some zones—especially those near waterways, national parks or heritage areas—require council approval or environmental assessment. It’s best to check with your local council or NSW RFS before starting large-scale clearing.
A contractor familiar with local rules can help you stay compliant.
When is the best time to create firebreaks?
Firebreaks should be established well before peak fire season—ideally in late winter or early spring. This allows for easier machinery access and reduces risk during dry months. Building early gives vegetation time to settle and minimises regrowth.
Creating or maintaining firebreaks during summer is not only risky but may breach safety regulations or total fire bans.
Can firebreaks stop a bushfire?
Firebreaks don’t stop fires entirely, but they slow them down and give firefighters space to work. A properly placed and maintained break reduces fuel loads and creates a buffer between the fire front and assets like homes, sheds or livestock paddocks. Combined with other hazard reduction strategies, they’re a key part of bushfire preparedness.
